When to apply for your Wayne County license
Michigan’s timing is among the tightest of any state we track. The clock starts when you apply, not when you pick the license up: you must wait 3 days, and then you have only 33 days in total. The workable window is therefore 3 to 33 days before your ceremony. Applying two months early, a common instinct, means the license expires before the wedding. Note the office hours as well: Monday through Wednesday and Friday until 4:00 p.m., Thursdays until 7:00 p.m., and closed for lunch from noon to 1:00 p.m.
After the ceremony: filing your Wayne County license and getting certified copies
Under Michigan law the officiant must return the signed license to the county clerk within 10 days of the ceremony. After it is filed you can order certified copies from the county clerk or from the state; the state has charged $34 for the first copy and $16 for each additional copy ordered together.
