Special notes

New Jersey has no county-level marriage office at all — every Essex County resident applies through their own municipality’s registrar (the ceremony municipality if neither applicant lives in New Jersey). Newark is shown here as a worked example; other Essex County municipalities follow the same $28 statewide fee and process through their own local registrar.

Frequently asked questions

Does Essex County have its own marriage license office?

No. New Jersey issues marriage licenses through municipal registrars, not counties. Essex County residents apply through the registrar of the municipality where they live.

Do both applicants need to appear together to apply in Newark?

Newark requires an appointment and a witness age 18 or older; contact the City Clerk’s Marriage Bureau directly to confirm current appearance requirements for your situation.
